It
is difficult to pinpoint when the game of Billiards
was first played. It is believed that the earliest
version was played on lawns and adapted from the
game of croquet. The game then progressed to being
played indoors on the floor, but this became hard
on the backs of the players. Around the 1600's the
game transferred to a table with no rails or pockets,
this progressed to a table with wooden rails and
rubber strips were used as cushions.

In
the late 1600's the cue stick was developed. The
pool cue started as a mace with a club like end,
and the player would hit the ball with this instrument.
On awkward shots, the players would then often turn
the mace around and use the handle to strike the
ball. The handle was called a queue (where we get
the name cueball). At that time only men were allowed
to use the cue because the sharp end was more likely
to damage the table cloth.
A
green wool cloth was used to cover the bed of the
table to make the shot more accurate. The colour
green was used to representgrass where the game originated. The
idea of having a cloth surface made the game look
more appealing, the ball roll was improved, and the
noise level was lower. These first tables were mostly
owned by royalty and nobleman because of the cost
of making and transporting them.
